The root of the human being
Jena University Hospital writes: “The microbiome moderates immune processes, and studies also demonstrate a connection between changes in the gut flora and psychological and neurodegenerative diseases. The gut microbiome also plays an important role in the brain's ability to learn.”
This is only one example of the far-reaching health effects of the microbiome, also known as the gut flora.
The microbiome has therefore become a central component of almost every preventive medical measure.
Comment from Dr. med. Claas Hohmann, Medical Director at Buff Medical Resort:
“It hardly matters which chronic disease we are dealing with – the path rarely bypasses the gut. Every specialist department at Buff Medical Resort is aware of this, which is why the microbiome now carries a very high importance.”
It processes our food, absorbs nutrients and forms a sensitive interface between the body and the outside world. At the same time, it is home to an individual ecosystem of microorganisms: the microbiome.
Many people only turn their attention to their gut once symptoms arise. Yet a closer look is worthwhile even without acute symptoms, because digestion, nutrient utilisation, immune activity, metabolism and communication with the nervous system are closely interconnected.
In a tightly scheduled everyday life in particular, there is often little room to notice the connections between eating, digestion, energy and tension. Prevention therefore does not mean looking for mistakes. It means understanding your own body better and finding out at an early stage what does it good in the long term.
There is neither one “perfect microbiome” nor a form of nutrition that suits every person. What matters is the overall picture: your personal situation, your habits, possible symptoms and medically relevant findings.
Understanding the gut better
01
The stomach and gut break food down and prepare nutrients for absorption. A feeling of fullness, bloating or changing digestion can have many causes. Individual symptoms therefore do not yet allow a reliable conclusion.
02
The intestinal mucosa decides very precisely which substances are absorbed and what should remain in the gut. At the same time, it is in close contact with the immune system. Its function cannot be assessed with a single value, but only in the medical context.
03
The microorganisms in the gut process components of our food and in doing so form numerous metabolic products. Through these and other signalling pathways, the gut is connected with, among other things, the metabolism and the nervous system.
As part of a team training session, Dr. med. Claas Hohmann gave a short lecture on digestion. We would like to make our recording available to you here.
The topics
Why is chewing enough so important?
What actually happens to my food in the stomach?
Why can the gut sometimes digest only poorly?
How can I influence my digestion positively?
Which symptoms or goals do you bring with you? What are your nutrition, eating rhythm, sleep, working day and physical activity like? Which illnesses, medications or previous findings should be taken into account?
Only from this and further information does a meaningful medical question emerge.
The physical examination is complemented by a medical abdominal examination according to F.X. Mayr. It helps to interpret your personal digestive situation in the context of the observations you have described.
Depending on the question, laboratory and metabolic values, continuous glucose monitoring or an examination of the microbiome can be included.
A single laboratory or microbiome value does not yet constitute a diagnosis. What is always decisive is the connection to symptoms, medical history and further medical findings.
The results are discussed with you in an understandable way. From these arise specific recommendations for nutrition, eating behaviour, daily rhythm and – where appropriate – complementary medical or therapeutic measures.
Our medical team combines many years of clinical experience with specialisms in F.X. Mayr medicine, nutritional medicine and prevention. The physicians do not consider gut health in isolation, but in connection with metabolism, physical activity, recovery and the personal life situation.
“With the gut in particular, more measured values do not automatically lead to more clarity. What matters is which question we want to answer – and what can be derived from it for the individual person.”
Dr. med. Claas Hohmann, Medical Director of Buff Medical Resort
As a certified F.X. Mayr Prevent Zentrum, Buff Medical Resort combines the proven principles of Mayr medicine with medical diagnostics, individual nutritional counselling and modern metabolic medicine.
This is not about a rigid fasting programme. Duration, nutrition and accompanying treatments are adapted to your starting situation, your goals and your stay.
Mindful eating, a temporary relief of the digestive system and attentive awareness of hunger, satiety and tolerance form a basis for this. Modern diagnostics help to develop a path from it that can also be carried into everyday life after your stay.
A detailed conversation, physical examination and medical interpretation of your digestive and health situation according to the principles of F.X. Mayr medicine.
More informationDepending on the medical question, the gut microbiome and selected metabolic parameters can be examined. The results are assessed not in isolation, but in the context of your personal situation.
More informationYour eating habits, tolerances and goals are considered together. From these arise individual recommendations that are medically sound and realistically achievable in everyday life.
More information on nutritional counsellingA sensor shows how the glucose curve changes in everyday life and after different meals. The results can help you to understand individual reactions better.
More informationThe duration and intensity of the fast, as well as the subsequent reintroduction of food, are determined individually and supervised by a physician.
More informationColon hydrotherapy is available as a complementary treatment. Whether it is included in the personal programme is decided after consultation with a physician.
More informationWould you like to understand your digestion better, shape your nutrition more purposefully or do something preventively for your gut health?
In a free initial conversation, with no obligation, our service team clarifies which options suit your goals and the stay you have in mind. If a specific medical question arises from this, we put you in personal contact with our medical team.
