Nervous system and brain health
The hippocampus is the part of the brain that is primarily responsible for emotions and memories. In people with dementia, this brain region typically shrinks, which explains part of the symptoms.
The study was able to show that, in 120 older adults, even moderate endurance training alone increased the size of the hippocampus again by about 2% – which corresponds to a biological rejuvenation of 1-2 years.
Comment from Valentina Slunjski, Head of Neurology at Buff Medical Resort:
“We have numerous current study results which demonstrate that we can have a considerable influence on our mental performance if we attend to important areas such as the gut, metabolism, exercise and stress.”
The brain is the control centre of our nervous system – but it never works on its own. Blood flow, metabolism, the gut, the muscles and the sensory organs are in continuous contact with it.
That is why, at Buff Medical Resort, we look not only at individual symptoms or measured values, but at how they interact.
Attention, memory, orientation and the ability to make decisions arise in complex networks. A medical consultation, a neurological examination, cognitive tests and modern imaging each answer different questions and are deliberately combined with one another.
“How is my brain health, even though I feel fit and capable?”
“Why do I sometimes find it harder to stay attentive or to switch off mentally?”
“Is my nervous system able to recover sufficiently?”
“What significance do earlier findings or illnesses in my family have for my preventive care?”
“In everyday life I notice that I am no longer as mentally capable as I used to be. What can I do?”

Our specialist in neurology, Valentina Slunjski, considers your personal history, existing findings and health goals. She decides which diagnostic steps are medically appropriate and brings the results together into an understandable overall picture.

Heart rate variability describes the natural fluctuations in the time intervals between heartbeats. Analysing it provides indications of how the autonomic nervous system accompanies the regulation between activation and recovery.
A single measurement, however, is not a diagnosis of “stress”. It only becomes meaningful in the context of sleep, breathing, exercise, exertion and further findings.
More information
High-resolution MRI imaging makes the structures of the brain visible. With the help of additional analysis software, the volumes of grey and white matter can, among other things, be evaluated quantitatively and structural or vascular changes can be considered in a differentiated way.
More informationYou do not need to know in advance which diagnostics or which health programme is suitable for you. In a free initial conversation, with no obligation, our service team takes time for your concerns and informs you about the possible next steps.
If a specific medical question arises from this, we will arrange a follow-up conversation for you with our medical team.

Our body is an orchestra of many different instruments, our organs, which have to play together harmoniously in order to produce a beautiful melody.
As soon as one instrument is out of tune or played incorrectly, the whole orchestra no longer works – in this sense it is just as important not only to look at the brain, but also to look at its interactions with other organs.
The brain alone requires about 20% of the body's total energy. Our metabolism and energy production are therefore absolutely decisive for remaining cognitively capable.
This includes cell health, mitochondrial performance, the immune system and many further factors.

Nutrition influences the energy supply, the metabolism and various processes that are also relevant to our nervous system. There is no single way of eating that is equally suitable for every person.

The brain coordinates all movement sequences and, in addition, its blood flow and supply improve markedly when we move. The saying “healthy body, healthy mind” is showing its relevance in modern science.
