Autonomic Nervous System Analysis (HRV Measurement)

How well can your nervous system switch between exertion and recovery?

Buff Medical Resort · Lake Constance

At a glance

Recovery can be measured

Every day our body has to adapt to different situations: concentration, physical activity and stress call for readiness to perform — rest and sleep, by contrast, call for recovery.

The autonomic nervous system plays an important part in this. How flexibly it can switch between activation and recovery can be assessed, among other ways, via heart rate variability — HRV for short.

HRV measurement therefore gives us an insight into your current regulation and helps to consider exertion and recovery in a more differentiated way.

Why a healthy heart does not beat perfectly evenly

Even with a steady pulse, the number of milliseconds between two heartbeats is not always exactly the same. These fine changes in timing are referred to as heart rate variability.

They are influenced substantially by the autonomic nervous system. The activating sympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch, which is important for rest and recovery, work together here, among other things.

Analysing these fluctuations provides information about how the autonomic nervous system is currently regulating and how flexibly the body can respond to different demands.

What can HRV measurement show?

Autonomic regulation

HRV provides information about how the autonomic nervous system regulates between activation and recovery.

Exertion and recovery

The measured values may help to assess how the body is currently coping with exertion and how pronounced regenerative activity is.

Individual development

Repeated measurements make it possible to reveal changes over a longer period.

A complement to further health data

HRV becomes particularly informative when it is considered together with sleep, physical activity, training load and further medical findings.

A few minutes for an insight into your regulation

Measurement at rest

Cardiac activity is recorded under conditions that are as calm and as standardised as possible.

Analysing heartbeat by heartbeat

Not only the heart rate itself, but in particular the time intervals between the individual heartbeats are evaluated.

Placing the results in context

Our specialists discuss the results with you and consider them together with your health situation, your exertion and your recovery.

How well do you recover from your everyday demands?

HRV measurement may be of interest, for example:

  • where professional or private demands are high
  • if recovery and sleep are to be considered specifically
  • for physically active people, as a complement to training management
  • if you have the feeling of being permanently under tension
  • to monitor progress within a health or recovery programme
  • as a complement to further examinations of the cardiovascular and nervous systems

A single HRV measurement does not provide a diagnosis of “stress”. What matters is your individual starting situation, the course over time and the joint consideration with further health data.
