The Buff Medical Resort lies directly on Lake Constance, on the sunny southern shore near Konstanz, embedded in the Büdingen Park with old-growth trees. For a treatment like Shirodhara this is precisely the right setting: a calm, warm environment with interiors of Swiss stone pine, in which you can rest in peace after the treatment.

Our Ayurveda treatments are performed by experienced Indian experts. Shirodhara fits into a broad wellness offering: various massages, our pool landscape, which flows from inside to outside, and open-air swimming in the park by the lake, the fireplace lounge as well as meditation, yoga and breathing exercises. You can book the treatment as a single point of rest or embed it in your stay.

Warm, body-temperature oils are used – traditionally sesame or herbal oil – which are guided evenly over the forehead. We are happy to advise you personally on the oil and the procedure.

What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is a treatment from Ayurveda. The name is composed of the Sanskrit words "shiro" (head) and "dhara" (flow). Warm oil is guided over the forehead – usually over the region between the eyebrows, which in Ayurvedic teaching is regarded as the "third eye".

Traditionally, warmed sesame oil or specially prepared herbal oils are used. The oil flows continuously from a vessel above the forehead while you lie relaxed. Shirodhara is frequently combined with a gentle head or body massage. In Ayurveda the treatment is among the calming rituals; it accompanies moments in which the mind is meant to come to rest.

Benefits

The warm, even flow on the forehead is experienced by many as very calming. Typically described effects are:

• a feeling of deep relaxation during and after the treatment
• a release of tension in the head and neck area
• a calmer, more even breathing
• cared-for scalp and hair thanks to the warm oil

What to expect

You lie relaxed on your back, your head comfortably supported. The warm stream of oil flows calmly and continuously over the forehead – often supplemented by a light head massage. For the treatment itself 75 minutes are allotted. Afterwards you should allow yourself some time to rest.
