Carotid Ultrasound

Making vascular deposits and narrowings visible at an early stage

Buff Medical Resort · Lake Constance

At a glance

How healthy are your vessels?

Changes in the vessel walls often develop over many years without initially causing any complaints.

The carotid arteries in particular provide important indications of vascular health. With an ultrasound examination, the vessel walls, blood flow and possible deposits can be made visible.

Carotid ultrasound is therefore an important element of cardiovascular prevention and helps to assess your personal vascular risk in a more differentiated way.

Ultrasound of the vessels supplying the brain

In carotid ultrasound, the neck arteries in particular — known as the carotids — are examined with the help of ultrasound.

Our cardiologists can display the vessel walls directly and assess whether deposits or narrowings are present.

Additional Doppler procedures also make it possible to analyse the blood flow through the vessels.

The examination is non-invasive, painless and requires no X-rays.

What can be examined?

Vessel walls

The vessel walls of the carotid arteries can be displayed and examined for possible changes.

Deposits

Atherosclerotic plaques can be made visible on ultrasound and assessed with regard to their extent.

Vascular narrowings

The examination can show whether the vessel diameter is relevantly restricted by deposits.

Blood flow

Doppler sonography makes it possible to assess the direction and velocity of the blood flow within the vessels examined.

Quick, painless and without radiation exposure

Preparation

You lie comfortably on an examination couch. The neck area is uncovered for the examination.

Ultrasound of the vessels

The doctor moves an ultrasound probe along both sides of the neck. The vessel walls and blood flow are displayed from different perspectives.

Medical evaluation

The results are assessed directly and placed in context together with your further cardiovascular findings and personal risk factors.

Detecting vascular changes before they cause complaints

Carotid ultrasound may be useful, for example:

  • as part of comprehensive cardiovascular prevention
  • where high blood pressure is present
  • where cholesterol or blood lipid values are elevated
  • for diabetes or other metabolic risks
  • where there is a family history of cardiovascular disease
  • where vascular changes are already known
  • to monitor existing deposits or narrowings over time
  • if your individual vascular risk is to be assessed more precisely

Whether the examination is necessary in an individual case, and which further diagnostic procedures are useful, is decided on the basis of your personal risk factors and findings.

Considering vascular health in the overall picture

Changes in the vessels are often connected with further cardiovascular and metabolic factors.

At Buff Medical Resort, carotid ultrasound can therefore be combined with examinations such as echocardiography, long-term blood pressure monitoring, ECG, spiroergometry and modern cardiac MRI diagnostics.

This produces a more comprehensive picture of heart function, vascular health and your individual cardiovascular risk.
