A close look at your heart rhythm
With every heartbeat, an electrical impulse spreads through the heart and ensures that the heart muscle contracts in a coordinated way.
An electrocardiogram — ECG for short — makes this electrical activity visible. Heart rate, heart rhythm and the conduction of the electrical impulses can thereby be assessed within a few minutes.
The resting ECG is therefore one of the fundamental examinations of cardiological diagnostics and provides important initial information about the function of your heart.
Making electrical cardiac activity visible
In a resting ECG, several electrodes are attached to the skin. They measure the weak electrical voltages that arise with every heartbeat.
These signals are displayed as characteristic ECG curves and then evaluated by a doctor.
The procedure is non-invasive, painless and takes only a few minutes. It is suitable both as part of a preventive examination and for the clarification of various heart-related questions.
What can an ECG show?
Heart rate
The ECG shows how fast the heart is beating at the time of the examination.
Heart rhythm
It can be assessed whether the heartbeats occur regularly or whether there are indications of an arrhythmia.
Electrical conduction
The electrical conduction within the heart can be analysed and examined for possible irregularities.
Indications of changes to the heart
Certain changes in the ECG curve may provide indications of strain on or disease of the heart and may be a reason for further examinations.

Attaching the electrodes
For the examination, electrodes are attached to the chest as well as to the arms and legs.
Recording cardiac activity
While you lie still, the electrical activity of your heart is recorded for a short time.
Medical evaluation
The ECG curves are then assessed and compared with your complaints, your history and, where applicable, further examination results.
A fundamental part of heart diagnostics
A resting ECG may be useful, for example:
- as part of a general or cardiological check-up
- for palpitations or a racing heart
- where the pulse is irregular or otherwise unusual
- for chest complaints or shortness of breath, as part of a medical assessment
- before certain exercise examinations
- where cardiovascular disease is known
- to monitor certain cardiac arrhythmias over time
- as a baseline examination before a medically supervised health programme
A resting ECG without irregular findings does not automatically mean that every heart condition has been ruled out. Depending on your complaints and risk profile, further examinations may be useful.
A starting point for further heart diagnostics
The resting ECG provides important basic information, but considers the heart only over a short period.
