At a glance
When a few seconds are not enough
A normal resting ECG shows the electrical activity of the heart for only a short period. Some changes in the heart rhythm, however, occur only occasionally — perhaps during exertion, at rest or during sleep.
With a long-term ECG, cardiac activity is therefore recorded continuously over many hours.
This gives our cardiologists a considerably more comprehensive insight into your heart rhythm and allows them to assess irregularities that may not occur during a short examination.
Observing the heart rhythm in everyday life
In a long-term ECG, a small portable device records the electrical activity of the heart over a longer period.
For this, electrodes are attached to the chest and connected to a compact recording device. During the measurement you can move around largely as normal in your everyday life.
At Buff Medical Resort the recording is usually made over 24 hours. Heart rate and heart rhythm are then evaluated cardiologically.
What can a long-term ECG show?
Heart rhythm
The continuous recording shows whether the heart beats regularly over the course of the day or whether irregularities of rhythm occur.
Rare arrhythmias
Changes that occur only occasionally and are not visible in a normal resting ECG can also be recorded.
Heart rate over the course of the day
The measurement shows how the heart rate changes during activity, at rest and during sleep.
Connection with complaints
If, for example, palpitations, a racing heart or dizziness occur during the measurement, it can be checked whether changes in the heart rhythm were present at the same time.

Recording the heart rhythm
The device records your cardiac activity continuously over many hours. In the meantime you can continue your daily routine largely as normal.
Cardiological evaluation
After the end of the measurement, the recorded data are evaluated. Irregularities are assessed in the context of your complaints and further cardiological findings.
Getting to the bottom of cardiac arrhythmias
A long-term ECG may be useful, for example:
- where palpitations recur
- where a racing heart occurs suddenly
- where the pulse is irregular
- for dizziness or brief disturbances of consciousness with a possible connection to the heart
- if complaints occur only occasionally
- where cardiac arrhythmia is suspected
- to monitor already known arrhythmias over time
- as part of comprehensive cardiological prevention
A long-term ECG without irregular findings does not rule out every possible cardiac arrhythmia. Which recording duration and which further diagnostics are useful depends on the individual question.

A heart rhythm can best be assessed in the context of further information.
