Long-Term Blood Pressure Monitoring
Recording blood pressure over day and night and assessing fluctuations better
At a glance
Blood pressure is not a snapshot
Blood pressure changes continuously over the course of the day. Physical activity, stress, rest, sleep and many further factors can influence which values we measure at a particular moment.
A single measurement at the doctor's practice therefore always shows only a small excerpt.
With long-term blood pressure monitoring, it is possible to assess how your blood pressure develops over many hours — in everyday life as well as during the night. This produces a considerably more comprehensive picture of your individual blood pressure regulation.
Understanding blood pressure over the course of the day
In long-term blood pressure monitoring, blood pressure readings are recorded regularly over a longer period.
This makes it possible to trace how systolic and diastolic blood pressure change in everyday life, during rest phases and during sleep.
The comparison between daytime and night-time values is particularly important here. The development of blood pressure at night can provide additional information that would not be apparent from individual measurements at the practice.
What can long-term monitoring show?
Average blood pressure
Many individual readings produce a considerably more informative picture of your average blood pressure values.
Fluctuations in everyday life
The measurement shows how your blood pressure changes during activity, at rest and in different everyday situations.
Blood pressure during sleep
The night-time values are recorded as well. This makes it possible to assess whether blood pressure falls appropriately during the rest phase.
Course over time and treatment
Where high blood pressure is already known, long-term monitoring can help to assess the existing treatment and the development of blood pressure more precisely.
Measuring during your normal day
Fitting the measuring system
At the beginning, the measuring system is fitted and its use is briefly explained.
Recording blood pressure over many hours
While you go about your normal daily routine, blood pressure readings are recorded regularly. The measurement also continues during the rest and sleep phase.
Medical evaluation
Daytime and night-time values, average values and possible irregularities are then evaluated and considered in the context of your personal cardiovascular risk.
Detecting high blood pressure early
Long-term blood pressure monitoring may be useful, for example:
- where high blood pressure is suspected
- where blood pressure readings are repeatedly elevated
- if the readings at home and at the doctor's practice differ considerably from one another
- where blood pressure readings fluctuate strongly
- to assess blood pressure during the night
- where high blood pressure is already known
- to monitor an existing blood pressure treatment
- as part of comprehensive cardiovascular prevention
Over a longer period, high blood pressure often causes no clear symptoms. A reliable assessment of blood pressure readings is therefore an important part of cardiovascular prevention.
Considering blood pressure in context
Blood pressure is only one factor of cardiovascular health.
At Buff Medical Resort, long-term blood pressure monitoring can therefore be combined with further examinations such as a resting ECG, long-term ECG, echocardiography, carotid ultrasound, spiroergometry and modern cardiac MRI diagnostics.
Blood pressure, heart rhythm, heart structure, vascular health and physical performance can thereby be assessed together.
