Echocardiography

Examining heart structure and heart function precisely and without radiation

Buff Medical Resort · Lake Constance

At a glance

Seeing the heart in motion

Our heart works without interruption — with every single beat, the heart chambers, heart valves and blood flow change within a few seconds.

With echocardiography, also known as a heart echo, these movements can be made directly visible with the help of ultrasound.

The examination provides important information about the structure and function of the heart and is one of the central procedures of cardiological diagnostics.

Ultrasound of the heart

In echocardiography, the heart is examined with the help of ultrasound waves.

This produces moving images on which the heart chambers, heart valves and the movement of the heart muscle can be assessed, among other things.

In addition, special Doppler procedures make it possible to examine blood flow and flow velocities. Our cardiologists therefore obtain important information about your current heart function within a short time — entirely without X-rays.

What can be examined in a heart echo?

Pump function

The examination shows how well the heart pumps blood into the systemic circulation and how the individual heart chambers move.

Heart valves

The heart valves can be observed in motion and assessed with regard to their function.

Size and structure of the heart

The heart chambers, heart walls and further structures can be measured and examined for possible irregularities.

Blood flow

Doppler ultrasound makes it possible to assess the direction and velocity of blood flow within the heart.

Gentle and directly at the examination table

Positioning

For the examination you lie comfortably on an examination couch. As a rule, the upper body is uncovered for this.

Ultrasound examination

The doctor moves an ultrasound probe over various areas of the chest. Moving images of your heart appear on the monitor.

Medical evaluation

Heart size, pump function, heart valves and further measured values are assessed directly and then brought together with your other cardiological findings.

A fundamental element of heart diagnostics

Echocardiography may be useful, for example:

  • as part of a preventive cardiological examination
  • where physical resilience is reduced
  • for shortness of breath or other possible heart-related complaints
  • where ECG findings are irregular
  • where heart murmurs are present
  • to assess the heart valves
  • where cardiovascular disease is known
  • to monitor already known changes to the heart over time
  • as a complement to cardiac MRI, long-term ECG and further cardiological diagnostics

Which examinations are necessary always depends on your individual health situation and the findings already available.

One part of comprehensive heart diagnostics

At Buff Medical Resort we do not consider echocardiography in isolation.

Depending on your personal question, it is combined with further procedures such as a resting ECG, long-term ECG, long-term blood pressure monitoring, spiroergometry, carotid ultrasound or modern cardiac MRI diagnostics.

This produces a differentiated picture of heart structure, function, rhythm and individual cardiovascular performance.
