Gait Analysis

Recognising movement patterns, understanding faulty loading and training more precisely

Buff Medical Resort · Lake Constance

At a glance

What your gait reveals about your body

Walking is one of the most natural movements of our everyday life. With every single step, the feet, legs, pelvis, spine and musculature work together.

Small differences in mobility, strength or stability can lead the body to compensate for certain movements. Such compensations often go unnoticed for a long time.

With a professional gait analysis we take a closer look at your individual movement pattern and create a basis for understanding loading more precisely.

Looking at movement more closely

In a gait analysis, we examine how your body moves while walking and how the individual body regions interact.

In doing so we pay attention to movement sequences, symmetry, stability and possible compensatory movements, among other things. This can reveal functional irregularities that are difficult to detect with the naked eye or in normal everyday life.

The results are then assessed together with your physical starting situation, any complaints and further examinations.

What can gait analysis show?

Movement patterns

The analysis shows how the feet, legs, pelvis and upper body work together while walking.

Differences between the sides

Differences between the left and right side of the body can be revealed and taken into account specifically.

Faulty and compensatory loading

The examination may provide indications of whether individual areas are loaded more heavily or whether other structures are compensating for movements.

Training approaches

Individual priorities for training, physiotherapy and movement optimisation can be derived from the results.

Step by step towards a better understanding of your movement

Considering the starting situation

At the beginning, your physical prerequisites, any complaints and your individual goals are taken into account.

Analysing the gait pattern

You walk under standardised conditions while your movement sequence is recorded and assessed biomechanically.

Discussing the results

Irregularities and movement patterns are then discussed with you. Where required, targeted exercises, physiotherapeutic measures or further examinations can be derived from this.

Understanding movement — before complaints arise

A gait analysis may be useful, for example:

  • where complaints recur while walking or running
  • if you notice one-sided loading or differences between the two sides of your body
  • for foot, knee, hip or back complaints, as part of a comprehensive examination
  • before starting a targeted training programme
  • for runners and other physically active people
  • after injuries or longer breaks from training
  • as a complement to physiotherapy and functional movement diagnostics

Not every deviation in the gait pattern is automatically a problem. What matters is whether it is relevant in the context of your individual mobility, loading and any complaints.
