Simulated Altitude Training: IHHT

Targeted oxygen stimuli for adaptation, recovery and physical resilience

Buff Medical Resort · Lake Constance

At a glance

Altitude training — without any mountains

Our body has the ability to adapt to different environmental conditions. A well-known example is staying at high altitude: less oxygen is available there and the organism has to respond to these altered conditions.

Interval hypoxia–hyperoxia therapy — IHHT for short — uses this principle under controlled conditions. While you lie relaxed, you breathe air with alternately reduced and raised oxygen content through a mask.

This creates targeted oxygen stimuli that can be adapted individually to your physical prerequisites and your health goals.

Targeted alternation between oxygen deficiency and recovery

In IHHT, short phases with reduced oxygen content — known as hypoxia — alternate with phases of increased oxygen supply.

Throughout the entire session, important parameters such as oxygen saturation are monitored. The intensity can therefore be set individually and adapted to the body's response.

Unlike classic altitude training, no physical exertion is required: the session takes place lying down, in a relaxed position.

What is the aim of IHHT?

Training adaptability

The controlled oxygen stimuli prompt the organism to adapt repeatedly to different oxygen conditions.

Supporting recovery

IHHT can be used as a complementary element of an individually tailored recovery programme.

Taking metabolism into account

Oxygen supply and energy production are closely connected. That is why, at BUFF, IHHT is also considered in the context of metabolism and physical performance.

Developing resilience

In combination with exercise testing, training and further measures, IHHT can be part of a programme to improve individual physical resilience.

Training in a relaxed position

Individual settings

Before the first session, your health situation and your individual tolerance are taken into account. The oxygen concentrations and intervals are set accordingly.

Alternating oxygen phases

While you lie relaxed, you breathe air with alternately reduced and raised oxygen content through a mask.

Monitored session

Relevant vital parameters are monitored throughout the session. Subsequent sessions can be adapted on the basis of your individual response.

Individual oxygen stimuli for different goals

IHHT may be of interest as a complementary treatment, for example:

  • if recovery and regeneration are to be supported specifically
  • after longer phases of high physical or professional demands
  • for physically active people as part of a performance programme
  • if physical resilience and metabolism are to be considered together
  • as a complement to individual training and exercise testing
  • within a comprehensive prevention or longevity programme

Whether IHHT is useful in an individual case, and at what intensity it is carried out, should be assessed medically beforehand.
